Overview
Interventions: Amplify was the fifth annual Interventions conference, a one-day design event organized by Scout, Northeastern University’s student-led design studio. The conference brings together students, professionals, and creatives from across the Boston design community to explore how design shapes culture, technology, and society.
For the 2022 conference, our team developed the theme Amplify, focusing on creatives, advocates, and organizations working to elevate marginalized voices through impactful design. As Design Lead, I worked with a multidisciplinary team of designers, developers, and marketers to create the conference identity and visual system across digital, environmental, and promotional touchpoints.
Background
Interventions is entirely student-run, with a new theme, brand, and experience developed each year. The 2022 conference centered on the idea of amplification, highlighting designers and organizations using their work to support underrepresented communities and drive meaningful social change.
Planning for the conference began two semesters in advance and involved close collaboration across design, development, and marketing teams. Together, we were responsible for shaping the entire event experience, from the visual identity and website to social campaigns, signage, and on-site materials.
Process
Working alongside a team of designers, I helped develop a flexible visual system that could support the many components of the conference experience. The design language emphasized bold typography, layered graphic elements, and a vibrant color palette that captured the energy and urgency of the theme.
The system was applied across the conference website, promotional assets, social media campaigns, and environmental graphics throughout the venue. In parallel with the development team, we ensured the identity translated seamlessly into the digital experience while supporting a clear and engaging user journey for attendees.
Brand System
The identity centered on expressive typography and modular graphic elements designed to visually “amplify” voices and ideas. Bright color combinations and repeating circular motifs created a sense of motion and expansion, reinforcing the conference’s focus on elevating new perspectives.
The system was designed to be highly adaptable, allowing the team to generate a wide range of promotional and environmental applications while maintaining a cohesive visual language across the website, social media, event signage, and conference materials.
Result
Interventions: Amplify took place at Northeastern’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex and welcomed students, educators, and industry professionals for a full day of talks, panels, workshops, and networking opportunities. The program featured speakers from across design, technology, education, and advocacy who shared perspectives on using design as a tool for social impact.
The event saw strong attendance and successfully created a space for meaningful conversations around equity, community, and the role of designers as advocates for change. As a student-led effort, the conference demonstrated the ability of a multidisciplinary team to plan and execute a large-scale creative event from concept through launch.
